Winfield's Open House/Car ShowOn November 3 of last year, while most of the country was slipping into winter, it was T-shirt weather in the California desert community of Mojave, where legendary car builder Gene Winfield has recently relocated. Gene's new digs, located at 8201 Sierra Hwy., Mojave, CA 93501, (661) 824-4728, sits on several acres inside some sort of time warp where, upon entry, you are immediately transported back in time to customizing's Golden Age-he '50s. Gene's new and improved Rod & Custom Construction is replete with a vintage shop and junkyard, which came with the property and now includes storage for a row of wild customs and movie prop vehicles (and storage is available for your excess projects, as well). And if you ever wondered what became of Gene's "Strip Star," it was there, too, awaiting restoration. Gene has even cloned "The Thing," his T-Coupe dry lakes racer from 50-plus years ago.
There was a great turnout of our hobby's participants, including such notables as Darryl Starbird, Dick Dean, Dick Skully, Larry Watson, Gary Minor, and many more. All in all, everyone had a great day, and now that you know where to find Gene Winfield once again, he says, "Don't be a stranger!"
