Who couldn't love this Galaxie? I know I had a hard time taking my eyes off it! "Starburst," from Ace Automotive, was honored with the Best '60s Pick courtesy of Mooneyes.

Last year, this '51 Merc was spied in a two-tone gray primer scheme. This year, the guys from Borders Kustoms fancied it up even more with an elaborate flame job!

Our trip ended on a high note with a farewell party at the Moon Cafe in Yokohama. It was also a chance to celebrate Chico Kodama's birthday, while Shige was presented with another token of affection--a personalized jacket from Gibbons (with everyone's signatures on the silk lining).

And don't think that Japanese rodders are all hell-bent on nostalgia--we spotted a few contemporary customs, such as this clean-as-can-be '58 Chevy wagon from Gumball Customs.

Touted as the celebrity guests of the 11th annual event, Jimmy Shine and Billy F. Gibbons made their grand entrance in Shine's '34 pickup. Literally the entire house swarmed in on each side of the police tape to witness it and a paparazzi-like barrage of people broke through that tape when the pickup came to a halt!

My first "real" custom was a chopped shoebox Ford, so you can sort of see why I leaned toward this as my CUSTOM RODDER Pick. Now, the fact that this '51 from Hiroes Rod & Custom featured a Tri-Power 348 and whitewall slicks made it even more obvious that this was the car!

The Shine in his prime--signing autographs with his sidekick, the right reverend Billy F. While they were busy wearing out Sharpies, I was out filling up CF cards on my digital camera, enjoying the show.

Shine's pick went to Shinya Kimura and his awe-inspiring early-Harley chopper. His company, Zero Engineering, has earned a reputation in Japan for building very unique HD customs-- this is but one example of the vivid imagination he and his crew have.

Our pal Junichi from Paradise Road showed up with his complete "Made In Japan" Model A sedan, dubbed "Rod"Riguez! In my humble opinion, this is probably one of the few (if not the first) successful attempts at combining hot rod, custom, and lowrider styling into one car. It walked away with the Street Rodder Pick hands down!

Van Nuys, a custom supply shop in Fuji, outfits many of Japan's rodders with highly sought-after necessities for their cars. Owner Akira's full-custom Dodge Dart is a regular at the show, and each year takes on a new look. The two-tone green suede job was a nice touch.
Wiring-the mere mention of the subject brings chills to the spines of most do-it-yourself rodders. For many, it's part of the sacred trio of chores left to hired guns-paint, upholstery, and wiring. But...
The 1949-51 Mercury is the quintessential custom car. Thousands of them have gone under the knife in the last five decades, so it's a little surprising to discover how little aftermarket support there...
