Springtime in Del Mar, California, is a perfect time--the lush green, brisk sea breeze, and all those old cars! Another Goodguys show was upon us, and we had quite a bit of work ahead, not to mention the tough job of picking the CLASSIC TRUCKS Top Ten for the show.
It's always good to have surprises, but we weren't prepared for the number of stop-you-in-your-tracks trucks spread around the fairgrounds despite a few spotty showers over the weekend that deterred the lightweights, who weren't missed in the end. There was a nice concentration of trucks and plenty of hot rods and customs to suit just about any taste. I even spotted our fair editor's old '55 Chevy truck cruising down the midway.
Speaking of the midway, there were plenty of vendors to cruise and shop. Many out-of-towners use the opportunity to meet the people behind the pages of their favorite catalogs and have the instant gratification of hauling something home with them. The swap meet was small this year, but full of everything from little goodies to restored cars and trucks.
Since we are on the clock at events, it's always nice to have the hospitality of vendors like PPG and Air Ride offered to cool our jets, not to mention the help of Tony from Air Ride to fix my rental, the Street Rodder '36 Ford Road Tour car! All in all, we had a great time and managed to bring back some fine features. Enjoy, and make plans to be there next spring; go to www.good-guys.com for the complete schedule.

Right on! That's what came... Right on! That's what came to mind when we found this Model T roadster pickup paired with wire wheels and a surfboard; it looked like it belonged on all those hot rod-inspired records from the '60s. Wayne Heidt's only tech specs on the RPU consisted of "original" and "old"--he forgot "boss!" |
You wanted to lean over and... You wanted to lean over and lick John March's C-10 to see if it was as tasty as it looked! The blacked-out grille was a nice touch that kicked up the Chevy's class. |
Lorenzo Menzo wasn't messin'... Lorenzo Menzo wasn't messin' around with his '63 Chevy! The taildragger has more flake in its roof than you might think possible, but hey, it works. With that in mind, so do the Raider wheels, whitewalls, and white tuck 'n' roll job. |
The folks from CPP had their... The folks from CPP had their hands full all weekend with prospective customers taking the opportunity to handle all of CPP's goodies. This smart customer put his order in for some of those slick new Chevy A-arms. |

Need we say more? |
The Aqua Phonics were busy... The Aqua Phonics were busy all Saturday keepin' everyone's ears full of good surf tunes while they munched on a wide variety of grub at the fairgrounds. |
When was the last time you... When was the last time you saw a Hudson Teraplane used as a push-truck for a 430 Lincoln-powered front engine dragster? Ted Cyr from Escondido, CA, owns the unlikely pair--wait, they're unlikely on their own! |
Whoa! What do we have here?... Whoa! What do we have here? This brute was lurking back by the swap meet and received its share of looks. Vern Grub piloted this SBC-powered '47 Dodge all the way from Yuma, AZ--sure beats a new SUV. |
Boy, do I have a home for... Boy, do I have a home for this sucker! Ford Racing teased everyone with some cool motors, even members from the "other side." |
