You know you've done something right when, generations later, someone actually copies your work to a tee. The brothers and original Adonis owner Bill Whetstone guided Adonis clone builder John Schleicher through the process. The car is faithful right down to the conduit that comprises the formed body edges and grille insert.

A young Mike Budnick brought the brothers a '60 Pontiac. Over a two-year span of modifications dictated by Mike's budget, the brothers responded with an extensive, elegant custom job. The Golden Indian appeared on the November 1963 Rod & Custom cover, among other places. Lou Calasibetta purchased and recently restored the Poncho at his Old Stillwater Garage. Bobby Massaron's Venturian wore many extensive modifications, including a padded lift-off top, '60 Mercury quarter-panels, and an unorthodox Avanti-like square headlight treatment. It had all the earmarks of a wild '60s hot rod: blown Olds, quad-headlight nose, heavy chop and channel, and whitewall slicks. Needless to say, with that Olds, this car could walk the song's Flathead-mill Deuce like it was standing still.

The Deora was the brothers' most famous creation, although its history is a bit tinged. First, the brothers' father died the week it was debuted, prompting them to scramble across town from the funeral to make the show. To make matters worse, according to Mike, a large corporation partially responsible for the car's fame scrambled the car's history, thereby slighting the brothers' and Harry Bradley's work.

The Deora's success inspired Chrysler to give the brothers another project car -- a '66 Barracuda. Though much milder, it had many innovative features, like recessed door pulls and a clear hood scoop. Mike's son, Michael, now owns it.
The 1949-51 Mercury is the quintessential custom car. Thousands of them have gone under the knife in the last five decades, so it's a little surprising to discover how little aftermarket support there...
