Unless you don't have a television, don't read the newspaper...ah, forget all that--if you're surfing the Net, you know about Monster Garage. Granted, it may not be your cup of tea, but among all the ridiculous "reality" shows being aired on the boob tube these days, it's the one you'll find most gearheads glued to each Monday night. We got wind through the grapevine that Jesse James was rounding up some of the customizing world's greatest names to take on a full-custom project, and took an extra-long lunch break to see for ourselves what was going on at the Garage. When we finally made it past security and all that, we found ourselves amongst Dick Dean, Gene Winfield, Bill Hines, Norm Grabowski, and the father-and-son team of Fat Jack and John Robinson cutting, grinding, welding, and, of course, leading away like mad on a full-custom '54 Chevy Bel Air. Going against the show's rule, "When finished, the vehicle must appear stock," the Kustom Build Team had already chopped the top and sectioned the main portion of the body. Winfield and Grabowski were hustling away sewing the body back together; Hines doing his thing with lead on the hood; Dean over in the corner making up some sheetmetal patch pieces; and the Robinsons were bustin' knuckles on the chassis. While the car may not turn out exactly like the Thom Taylor rendering (design-wise, like the rear window), it will be a landmark custom nonetheless--can you think of any other custom ever built with a collaborative team such as this? We won't let the cat out of the bag on whether or not this team received their Mac Tools...you'll just have to wait until this episode of Monster Garage airs on The Discovery Channel!
